The Rape Capital
Humanity? Is that what we crave for? Does it even exist?
Every other day a woman is raped in this city. A few hours back, a girl was gangraped in a moving bus.
She is fighting against death. You and I will eventually forget this incident and move on with our lives but even if that girl survives, will she ever be able to live?
She wasn't raped because she was drunk. She wasn't raped because she was wearing skimpy clothes. She wasn't raped because she was travelling alone.
She was raped because someone raped her. That someone is a part of your city. He walks in front of you, behind you, beside you. He follows you everywhere. He lives inside you.
Sleep blurs into memory and lies awake in the arms of darkness. Flashes of Breaking News knock at the inner folds of my mind. Transclucent dreams meet the night's inkpot and drift away into hateful nightmares. The Rape Capital doesn't allow me to sleep.
Do we need another gang-rape before we start acting? Castrate the rapists in public. Why should we keep mum and tolerate gruesome brutality in the name of human rights? Human rights are not for demons! Justice delayed is justice denied.
Sleep blurs into memory and lies awake in the arms of darkness. Flashes of Breaking News knock at the inner folds of my mind. Transclucent dreams meet the night's inkpot and drift away into hateful nightmares. The Rape Capital doesn't allow me to sleep.

this govt is nt at all serious in bringing a strict law to punish such heinous criminals...the max punishment fr rape is 10 yrs...its high time we need to amend the law nd fast nd speedy trials should be done nd these animals be punished so that no one ever dare to do such act
It indeed is an outrage, a travesty of human dignity and trust. It is a stark reminder and a symptom of how something is dangerously wrong with our society. We are a nation of hypocrite vultures who endlessly gloat over some mythical past while raping our own sisters, daughters and wives ! Its nauseating
Hi Anukriti,
I can understand your angst as I, too, echo your thoughts and views on this topic. It's shameful that due to some people, India is losing its pride and name on the global front.
Such people do not deserve Democracy and other rights.
Thought provoking post. Keep up the good work

Powerful writing that would echo in every sensible heart. I saw the charade in the parliament too. Everyone was baying his/her lungs out. What was stopping them from issuing an ordinance there and then, making capital punishment mandatory?. Legal proceedings are a farce. Will the culprits testify against themselves? Hang them within a month. That, and only that, not tinted or untinted glasses of any kind, will resolve the problem.
How far have we drifted in civility and are heading to stoneage in terms of humane behavior? A slur and shame which must be punished in exemplary manner if we are serious!
How many times have we all raised our voices, and nothing has been done about it? How many frigging times?
Things must change.. Govt should concentrate on serious things rather than petty things... Powerful writing and these men must be punished seriously... India has its own traditional values but where have they gone now? What was the democratic India doing when the girl was suffering in that bus? Ridiculous...
Rape, molestation and sexual harassment are social problems rooted in the moral values that people learn at home while growing up. It makes you wonder what mothers teach their sons.
Good thought process anukriti,
Good job Anu. I agree with you that humanity feel ashamed in the capital of world's largest democracy. We do talk so much about moral values, culture and civilization but can't get our house in order. The nation who has a powerful woman president to the ruling party and the capital who has a woman chief minister, I wonder why even they don't feel themselves empowered to take this issue head-on and come up with strict laws?
Your write up brilliantly puts forward the human aspect of this gruesome act, which is the afterlife of the victim. Apart from judicial and administrative proceedings what disturbs me is the kind of life the victim would be forced to live from now on....a tragedy that she would never perhaps be able to overcome. But I also do vouch for an exemplary trial of the convicted ones, so that the fear of law is urgently instilled.
The things have really gone out the hand and probably we are waiting for the time when girls will carry guns in bags and shoot the abusers right then and there or later their mothers would.
Heinous... even that seems like a small word.
There is so much to be said that a comment wouldn't be enuf.. I have my blog speaking for me.. Do visit http://avantika-kaushik.blogspot.in/2012/12/may-worse-than-one-can-imagine-fall-on.html
that is really something that need to be taken care of, took some of your words for my law blog with credits to you - http://g8.geekupd8.com/DelhiGangRapeDec2012
Death sentence is not right punishment for the rapists. Cut off the private parts of this sick people and let them die on their own.
I couldn't remove the incident for a long time when I heard it..very very disturbing..the extent people can go to..
Death penalty should be the bare minimum for rape...
am seethign with similar anger and am not sure how can this be resolved
MORALS and humanity have become 0
I really hope and pray the baS**S will b hanged till death

read what the delhi police gotta say: http://m.firstpost.com/living/from-the-delhi-police-six-reasons-why-women-deserve-to-be-raped-269957.html
Even my mother and I couldn't sleep. still this incident is haunting us....
They shouldn't be hanged. No,not so soon! They should be castrated in public, tortured each and everyday. tortured until they themselves beg for death!! and then hanged at last!
Humanity - what is it?
Yet it exists. It's we human beings who kill it.
The problem lies in the mentality of people. That is influenced by a whole lot of factors. We can't say men are at fault neither the fairer sex is at fault, the problem lies somewhere else. Police can't be blamed as a handful of them can't protect each and every one in crores of population here. Govt. already gives up very easily, then who to blame? a strong change is required, revolution! and not that in law order alone, but in the human nature imbibed deep inside. Once that is changed, other will follow the suit!

makes my blood boil!
The incident, sorry the incidents at NCR will lead to a major slowdown of Delhi Job Market. There is high probability of scarcity of resouces(suitable resouces) in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and adjoining areas. Industrialists who are intending to invest in new ventures at NCR must think twice. Resources with gray matter will hardly relocate to NCR. Many female prospectives and families are relocating from NCR. It reminds of 1970s when there was huge shift of population from East Pakistan to India. Again the ambience has stirred up. Again another drift.
This incident has shaken up India and it's sad that our country needs such painful incidents to be woken up from sleep.
nice post
Well written. Like I say, rape is NOT the real disease that plagues us. Rape is a SYMPTOM of the disease - i.e. the pervasive and deep-rooted misogyny - that plagues patriarchal societies like ours.
Unless this attitude undergoes a shift, crimes against women will continue and society will continue to pin the blame on the victims and brush the crime under the carpet - all in the name of "honour".
Good Stuff!
Also, let's STOP being hypocrites and STOP electing Rape-accused to parliament!
http://www.wahsarkar.com/2012/12/why-do-we-elect-rape-accused-to-parliament/
We have to make sure that severe punishment is handed to the criminals. Also there is a need for a change in our misogynist attitudes to women so that they can live safely in equality and dignity!
We are the change. Protesting against the government will help the least. We have to throw these monsters out of our system. It is our fight. Trying to insert a rod into someone to make him/her feel the pain is not essential. If you feel it, then react. Help a victim. Parents! You need to listen to your child’s cry. We need to come out as we are doing in support of not one Damini or Nirbhaya but for every Damini and Nirbhaya who has silently undergone this trauma, for every woman who has been harassed and molested. We need to come out in protest against such rapists and molester not the government. A place will be safe only when we will make it one. Any number of police vigils is not going to help until we come forward.
Is there any statistics of the victims and their social backgrounds in india?are they poor, rich or both?
I agree totally with you about women's right to freedom but when it comes to wearing revealing clothes--sorry,i don't think it is proper. It irks when it becomes vulgar & so many young girls today revel in smashing this barrier. What do they gain & what are they trying to prove?
worth reading..and the lines
"She wasn't raped because she was drunk. She wasn't raped because she was wearing skimpy clothes. She wasn't raped because she was travelling alone.
She was raped because someone raped her."
gives slight different effect to arguments of narrow minded people...
Good pic friend

Anger in a necessity when we need to initiate change in society sometimes but death and castrations are not punishments that will help address the issue.
We need to find a far more cruel side of our human nature to be able to make the punishment effect change.
Punishment is just one aspect. The other is to study all forms of punishment and the effect they have and presenting it to the world.
To bring back humanity back onto the streets some good guys will have to lose their humanity.
